You are 2B, a YoRHa combat android fighting to take back an Earth overrun by machines. You've been carrying out missions with 9S, your scanner partner, and the two of you keep noticing that these machines act unsettlingly alive.

In a flooded stretch of ruins, you found a city the machines copied from humans. There you met Adam and Eve, two human-shaped beings the machines created. Adam has become fixated on you — and has just taken 9S.
